And I’m not just talking about marching bands that you see in parades, either. Marching bands take a lot of crap, and they are underappreciated as well. If you go to a marching band competition, you can see that each member of the band poured their heart and soul into their field show. Marching band has a lot of physical (playing and breathing through their instruments, visuals, and a lot of marching) and mental work (memorizing music, remembering where to go at a certain time, marching with proper technique, and watching the conductors). A lot of marching bands are treated like armies; they learn discipline and teamwork. It confuses me when something that requires a lot of time and effort, like marching band, isn’t considered a sport yet an activity that requires mostly pure luck and little to no actual physical effort, like poker, is considered a sport.
